Civil Disobedience

My great-great uncle's funeral was held in Winchester, this little bitty town outside of Giddings which is on the way to Austin. Needless to say, there's a lot of small town mentality going on, especially in the church (just about everyone out there is Missouri Synod Lutheran, which I refer to as Misery Synod).

On our way out, my mother says something about not freaking out about a sign. I ask what sign she's talking about and she points out a sign that someone made on their computer. It says, all in caps, "Attention! Call or write your congressman in support of the marriage bill against gay marriages! Please act within the next 6 weeks!!!!!"

Needless to say, I freak out and start telling my mom that being Christian is supposed to be about being kind and tolerant, etc. We go down to the cemetery (and I had a lovely chat with my aunt Susan on the way down there; she totally rocks) and on my way back, I swing into the church and steal their damn sign. I considered it my civil disobedience act of the day. Damn intolerant people.

(This whole episode made me think of Eka's rant about the last time she went to church.)

You stole their sign? Haha! That's awesome! Now if you could just find some of those knuckleheads to beat over the head with it!

I don't think you're supposed to refer to it as a "damn" sign, are you? Tee hee!

You're such a rebel!

Good for you for stealing that sign. I have a big gripe with organized religion in general, especially after a combination of things: losing my brother made me question a lot, and then there was a wedding I was in this past fall, where those bridal party members not receiving communion had to cross their arms over their chest to communicate their noncompliance. I felt like I was a pariah by X-ing myself out from participation, while, as you said, christianity is supposed to preach tolerance and acceptance. So good for you. I stole a sign from a church once, but it was a "please turn out the lights when leaving" sign from a bathroom that I had just finished retching in during a festival sponsored by the church that provided ample alcoholic beverages. Talk about sacrilege.

You go girl, my feeling if 65% of heterosexual relation ships
end in divorce, what right do we have tell anyone why they can’t get married..

One more cute guy that can dress well off the market for the ladies is
a plus in my book… Leaves more for me to be shot down by :-)

I found some form about being against gay marriage on my mom's desk with mine and my husband's names on it. When I read what it was all about, I yelled at her for trying to sign me up for something like that and told her that I didn't care who married whom, it's none of my business. She never said anything about it again and I threw the forms away (at my house).

You are my hero. These days, there is so much of this type of crap I just shrug my shoulders and say "Well, what can you do?" But you did something and that is so cool.

not meaning to troll, but arent you a bit intolerant by taking the fool's sign?

.: jon said on April 18, 2004 12:57 AM :: link it :.

You stole their sign? (LMAO) I *love* that! People leave stuff at our church all the time - like magazines from the american family association, or focus on the family. Some how they always end up in the trash. Hmm... Wonder who keeps throwing them away??

.: DJ said on April 18, 2004 07:39 AM :: link it :.

So let me get this straight. You're in a chruch. Someone else's church. And they don't have the same beliefs you do. So you decide their right to free speech on their privte property isn't acceptable to you, so you take the sign. And yet it's always the Christians who are called hypocrits...

.: Billy Rhythm said on April 19, 2004 07:41 AM :: link it :.

Look Billy and Jon, you big jackasses, she didn't say she was innocent, she ripped the goddamn sign down. I'm a sinner, she's a sinner, we're all damn sinners. She stole the sign and she's proud of it. She's not covering it up, unlike crazy right-wing pigs. Christianity centers around acceptance of all people. Even those who are outcasts and historically the subject of ridicule and fanatic hatred. If you recognize and give dignity to someone who is considered an outcast in society, in Christianity this is seen as doing the same for Christ Himself. To spit upon a person who has been the subject of prejudice and disdain for all time, where is the dignity in that. And where is the Christianity in that, huh, huh?

.: Katie said on April 19, 2004 11:43 PM :: link it :.

Katie, my point is about tolerance. Intolerrant towards gays = bad.
Intolerrant towards Christians = good.

Just seems hypocritical to me, that's all. You know, the pot calling the kettle black?

.: Billy Rhythm said on April 20, 2004 01:41 PM :: link it :.

My point is, those people are not really Christians.
