The older I get, the less my father's opinion matters to me. As my kids get older and I learn to deal with their changes, I realize that my father was never equipped to be a good father. It's not even his fault. And I've learned that I don't need his approval. My sadness about him, it has occurred to me, is not actually about him but is a sort of mourning for something that never actually existed. I've "known" you a very long time now (damn, it really is a long time, isn't it?) and I know that you're absolutely fabulous and if you take a moment to think about it, you'll realize that that is the truth.
