I'm listening to my mp3s on shuffle and Marc Cohn's version of "Walkin' in Memphis" came on. Does anyone remember The X-Files episode called "Postmodern Prometheus" that was done in black and white? I love it at the end when everyone goes to see Cher in concert and she's singing "Walkin' in Memphis" and Mulder and Scully dance together. That has got to be one of my favorite episodes. I'll be sad to see The X-Files ending this season, but I've been so unhappy with the show ever since David Duchovny left. At least I've got the first four seasons on DVD.
LOL, I totally forgot about that episode! It was so funny, I wish I could see it again.
Well, the good news about the XF is that it is ending this year, and even mo' bettah is David is returning for the 2 hour finale (as well as directing an upcoming ep or two).
Now that CC will have some time on his hands, maybe we can finally look forward to a good XF movie.

As far as I can tell it is Cher then Marc Cohn and Lonestar have made newer versions of the song.

I remember a single version back around 1990-91 (?) that got some radio air play on the stations around Wheeling WV. It was not the version off of Carl Cohns album. The DJs in Wheeling claimed the record was performed by a local guy from the Wheeling/Elm Grove West Virginia area. Ed

Marc Cohn wrote 'Walking in Memphis' about his trip to Tennessee in the late Eighties. It's a tale of musical salvation in which Marc grows disillusioned about music after a visit to Graceland, but is revitalised by a chance visit to the Hollywood Cafe in Robinsville whereupon he sings with an African-American Gospel singer by the name of Muriel, hence the line "Muriel plays piano every Friday at the Hollywood". The only contribuation Cher made to the song was to completely ruin it!

I saw the episode of X-Files last night on late night tv where Cher sings at the end. I really like that episode, too; as I had seen it before. It did stir my curiosity once more about who originally performed/wrote "Walking in Memphis". I was almost certain it wasn't Cher (although I like her vision, and I am no fan of hers). I guess it was Marc Cohn, as I haven't found anything to the contrary. I just started watching X-files routinely in reruns. As I haven't seen many, it can be hard to follow!
