Unhappiness
I am unhappy in so many areas in my life right now. I hope that everyone's right and it's just because it's been a really shitty February, but things have got to start getting better soon. I can't take this much longer.

I know so many people who've just gone through so much shit this month. :( On the bright side, February is OVER after today, so maybe March will get us all over the hump.
I'll send some good vibes over your way, just in case. ;)

Wow...a lot of people have had a horrible month (mine wasn't terrific, either). Let's all hope that March is the complete opposite of February.

Operation TROOPtrax
Michelle has come up with a great idea: Operation TROOPtrax.
The idea is to collect money and send CDs, comic books, and magazines to the men and women serving overseas. It's a great idea and one that I think our military would really appreciate.
Even if you don't support the war, you should support the troops, so go give a few dollars.

Better Day
Today was a better day than I thought it would be. We launched one site without any major hitches, launched a bunch of functionality for another site, and the site we launched yesterday required a lot of changes (mostly text and some stuff that was questionable as to scope) that we've almost completed and should have done tomorrow.
I've been feeling very bleak about where we are project-wise, but with these launches and the new intern (who's working for free! Poor lad!), I think we may be better off than I thought. Of course, every time I think that it tends to be wrong, but I'll be optimistic and say it's true this time.
At least it's almost Friday. This week has seemed endless and I swear this morning I thought it was Tuesday. *shudder* That would have been really bad.
If I could get rid of this headache that I've had all day, things would definitely be better. Go away, headache! Shoo!

What a Day
As you may or may not know, I work at a web development company as a project manager. I've got three sites that are supposed to launch tomorrow. Oy.
I'm also exhausted due to a large thunderstorm we had last night. Around 4:30 there was thunder and lightning the likes of which I've rarely seen. I was reminded of Poltergeist when the little boy was counting how far the storm was before he got attacked by the tree.
I'm still at work, but ready to go home and relax, maybe take a hot bath. Aunt Flo's getting ready to visit, so needless to say, I'm feeling kind of crappy. Calgon, take me away!

Frailty
As some of you may have noticed, I have a DVD collection of well over a hundred movies. What you probably don't know is that after I buy most of them, I don't even watch them. Strange, huh?
Anyway, Steven fell asleep on the couch last night so I popped in one of the movies that I have really wanted to watch - Frailty, a movie about a father who sees demons and teaches his kids how to destroy them. One of the kids sees his dad commiting murder and one sees him dispatching demons which leads to a struggle of what is truly reality.
All in all, I quite liked it. The ending was not impossible to guess, but I thought it was done very well and I really liked the idea behind it. The two kids who played Fenton and Adam were great. Rarely does a movie like this get kids this good. Bill Paxton directed it (it was shot in just 37 days) and I thought he did a good job since he has directed a film in almost twenty years. I would have liked it a little more suspenseful, but I still recommend it.
Anyone else seen it? What did you think?

Blogging For a Cure
Several years ago I found a site called United Devices. They ask you to volunteer your PC to help process molecular research being conducted by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in England and the National Foundation for Cancer Research. To participate, you simply download a very small, no cost, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver: it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes research until you need your machine. Your computer never leaves your desk, and the project never interrupts your usual PC use.
There is no cost to participate and no impact on your computer use. The project software cannot detect or transfer anything on your machine but project-specific information. It just allows your computer to screen molecules that may be developed into drugs to fight cancer. Each individual computer analyzes a few molecules and then sends the results back over the Internet for further research. This project is anticipated to be the largest computational chemistry project ever undertaken and represents a genuine hope to find a better way to fight cancer.
You can download the agent here and read the FAQ here.
If you do decide to join, I have created a team called Blogging For a Cure. Please sign up for the team after you join. If you dedcide to become a team member e-mail me your username at UD (so I can tell who you are) and site info and I'll add you to the blogroll.
This is an easy, free way to help fight cancer, so please add your computer's resources to the project.

MT Upgrade Almost Flawless
Well, I upgraded Movable Type 2.62 and the upgrade was near flawless. I say near flawless because I gave my sidebar and my sidebar info files the same template name over at BiblioBlog, thus overwriting all of the sidebar information I had so carefully crafted.
If by any chance you go over there and see all the correct info (currently you'll see multiple calendars. Obviously not the right info), do me a favor and send the html pretty please. :-)
Otherwise, painless upgrade and all should be functioning properly. Please send me an e-mail if you notice anything wonky.

TiVo Problems
In September I upgraded my TiVo and have had absolutely no problems with it until this past week. Lately there is a problem with the saved shows having "skipping" in the sound.
The biggest problem, however, has been that the TiVo freezes up and I have to restart it by unplugging the power cord. It's missed several shows and when I checked the Recording History notes it says it was because the TiVo was either unplugged or the power was off. Btw, when restarting, it does the same skipping (think jerky play) during the TiVo intro.
The hard drive is probably pretty full, so I was wondering if maybe it's a bad hard drive issue. Has anyone else encountered this? It's a huge issue, so any help at all would be appreciated. I know several people who drop by here have units too.
FYI, the unit is about two years old.

We don't have any problems with ours, but I'm sure it's a matter of time. I think if you google around, you might be able to find out how to defrag the hard drive or something along those lines.

do you have the series 2?? I still have the old model and occasionally I do have to unplug and restart everything but usually when my cable turns off all together. It doesn't happen very often though so I never looked for a fix for it. It's one of the reasons I'll probably take them up on their upgrade offer.

I am a newbie. I recorded several shows and some of them I was able to watch and others, screen goes blank and black. It shows in the history as being recorded successfully! I tried restarting it a few times and it did not work. Any ideas?
Posted by kddk at October 2, 2003 08:35 PM
Tivo hanging has been happening to me for the past 3 months getting more and more regular until recently when I've had to "hard re-boot" (power cycle) the box to get it working. It is now at the point where it hangs on the "powering up... please wait" screen every time so I cannot use the box at all. I have tried a complete rebuild of the system on several occasions which theoretically (according to Tivo support) initialises the disk drive. This would rule out disk fragmentation as the underlying fault. I am told the startup routine is run from ROM and not the hard drive, so this may rule out the disk altogether and point more towards an internal memory error. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know... I'm going to open mine up and check all the connections and seatings of hard drive and memory as they may have worked them selves loose. I'll post something up if I find anything. Btw... Has anybody found out where you can get the things repaired? No one seems to want to touch them!

First, the "hanging/skipping" is the first signs that you are about to have serious problems. The next symptom will be "freezing" during the reboot process. Hughes says it is caused by faulty grounding on your coaxial cable, but I'm not buying that. Here is the number for Hughes tech support. They have RMA'd mine twice already in the last year. 954 597-2062. Good luck

Tivos are well known for hard drive problems. Ask any retail dealer about their return experience and you wil hear about the hard drive failure rate.
When you call up Sony and ask them about a bad product, they will first send you and replacement product, by one day express mail, and then ask you to return the bad unit. With Panasonic/Tivo, they tell you to return the unit to Long Beach, wait several weeks, and get used to it. I paid $1800 for a Pansonic DVR-57H and this is how I am treated.!!! I returned the unit the next weekend to Harvy Electronics for a full refund.
If you are going to charge premium prices, you have to provide preium service - not trailer park-level service.

Kept getting daily call failure (failed while loading data). Used phillips 'kickstart' a few times with no luck. Reset system deleting everything, and now it freezes on 28% checking satelite (have full signal strength).
Will install new harddrive tonight and hope that fixes it.

I'm one of about 12 people who have TiVo in England. I think it's great apart from the sound quality that goes crackly for about a minute then is fine for two then crackly again. Itas consitent as it is annoying. I have spoeken to TiVo about it and they say maybe i want to return it to them in Scotland for them to check out but frankly I don't...
Any ideas anyone out there?

We are on our second Hughes Direct TV TiVo. It is now exibiting the same problems as our original TiVo. The sensor that receives the infrared remote signal grradually deteriorates over a period of about two months. The remote works fine because the TV is instantly responsive to it's signal (but we tried a few changes of new batteries just in case). Let me know if anyone else is having this problem.

My TIVO has stopped working as well - it's a 4 month old Series one. Tried the unplug and plug trick several times with no luck. Remote will turn TV on and off but that's it. Damn.

28% is a fault in the sowtware from directv. To get past it, redo guided setup but unplug both of your sat inputs, let if fail getting a signal and select fix this problem later, then plug in your cables and you should be good to go. It sometimes will get stuck on 70%, same problem, same solution. has nothing to do with your hard drive.

Have a Series Two. 18 months after purchase. Started freezing on playback. Recycled the power and could watch live programming.
Called Customer Support. Told that exchange was needed. Since we are out of warranrty, the cost is $149 plus shipping.

I have a series 2 and i use the home link cable. All of a sudden, the TiVo stopped changing channels below channel 100. Anyone else ever seen this. TiVo support can't figure it out.

Trading Spaces
I saw my first Trading Spaces today and I quite enjoyed it. It was the episode where the kid's room was turned into an outdoor adventure complete with a rock climbing wall and tent and the other couple's bedroom was turned into a romantic meditative space with a hanging bed.
I really thought the couple was going to hate what was done to their bedroom but they did seem to like it. All that orange would probably quickly get on my nerves.
It's definitely a cool idea, but I don't know if I could get behind letting my neighbors loose in my house to redecorate a room.

I've watched it a few times, but I do not like what they do mostly. Too over the top for me....

In our old house, we painted the bedroom this (kind of bright) green. I liked it - although I kinda like the color green to begin with. I still wonder what the woman who bought our house thought of it. I keep thinking she must have gone in there and said "oh yeah! Re-painting THIS room!!!" LOL!

i watch out of morbid fascination, but honestly could never participate in trading spaces. i couldn't surrender control like that. anyone remember the trading blogs thing erika (snazzykat) did a few years ago? i could barely handle letting anyone redesign my site for me. imagine my house--something much more costly and permanent? no. don't think so.

I watched an episode here and there, and it seems like fun, although I think I would let someone decorate....let's say the......basement. :)

I love love love that show! Especially when Ty's the carpenter for the episode. Yummy!

I agree with Blaine, unless they want to do Marite's idea.
I didn't know the name of the carpenter! wow, he is such a doll.

Ooh, I adore that show! I definitely don't love everything they do, and sometimes it's like a train wreck- you just can't not watch. What annoys me are the people that go on who obviously have extremely rigid ideas of things they like and pitch a big fit about everything they're doing in their neighbors' house as well as their own when they see it. Who goes on a show like that then?! It's not like the Trading Spaces crew comes to your house and horsewhips you into agreeing to be on it.
Rant aside, I do get some good ideas for cheaper home craftiness sometimes.

Sounds a bit like the UK TV show 'Changing Rooms'.
By the way, I can't seem to scroll down in your comment popups - I'm using Mozilla.

I used to watch more often than I do now, more for lack of time than interest though. And while I'd let TS's designer Vern run amuck in my house any day, when it comes to the neighbors... I highly doubt that would ever happen!

im a fan of you show, but why do you still employ doug and hildi? their designs are unliveable.they resemble early american garage sale. do they actually have a designing degree? i think not. why not moe shows featuring frank. some one who has talent and a flare for art. truthfully i start to channel surf when i see those two hacks. im not the only one that feels this way. why not take a vote who the favorites are ?

Interesting to watch for how things are built. Would I participate? NOT in this lifetime! The idea of stapling cheap plastic flowers, glueing corregated cardboard or randomly scattered newspaper pages as wall coverings? I can't help but wonder how many of the homeowners later found that the makeovers were a liability? Sorry, painting over paneling or existing wallpaper is NOT the quality way to do things; it just makes for a quick CHEAP way to film an episode and move on to their next victims. Tactfully, most of the changes are cosmetic, and ARE reversible!

The Return of The Gold Box
I hadn't posted my Amazon.com Gold Box Offers in quite some time, so I thought I'd share them even though I didn't buy anything.

By the way - that's not a vacuum. It's a carpet steamer, and it ROCKS. My mom has one and I love using it - it makes my carpets look like new!

I used to post my Gold Box offers too, until I figured out a couple of things. Not only do they not offer items you might actually like (which they could do, using their Recommendations feature), but they offer almost exactly the same things to everyone. The Gold Box has a lot of potential as a moneymaker, but until they offer me things I might actually want to buy, I'm not going to purchase anything!

Kitty Problem
I posted on Friday that Bella wasn't feeling well after going to the vet and getting four (it was four, not three) shots.
It's been a couple of days now and she's still pissy if anyone picks her up (she was never like this before) and while she's using her box, she's also peeing in the floor, one time right in front of Steven.
I'm planning on calling the vet tomorrow and telling them about all of this, but I thought I'd ask and see if any of my readers might now if this is normal behavior or not. I miss my sweet kitty. :-(

What kind of shots? I would think that some types of shots might have more of an effect than others.
Posted by Art at February 16, 2003 05:50 PM
My cats get three separate vaccinations: rabies, FVRCP (a combo vaccine for distemper and a few other diseases) and FeLV. It is normal for them to be a bit cranky and lethargic for about a day afterwards, but I've never had the peeing on the floor problem.
I've also never seen this go on for as long as it is with Bella. Usually my kitties are back to their normal selves by the end of the day.
It might prove to be nothing, but I would still be concerned. You are doing the right thing by calling the vet tomorrow.
I wish I could be of more help here. I hope Bella feels better soon!
Posted by Christine at February 16, 2003 06:13 PM
Aw, poor kitty. Maybe she is having some sort of reaction to the shots. I would definitely take her in asap. Hope she feels better soon.
Posted by Steph at February 16, 2003 07:52 PM
After going through something similiar with my baby Phoebe, I have to say that it sounds like a behavioural problem. You can always take her back to the vet and rule out a UTI, etc., but if that comes back clear, it's more than likely that she's upset about something. If you need more info, drop me an email. I have several link on cat behaviour.
Posted by Jenni at February 16, 2003 11:27 PM
Knowing how she was at Christine's house I'd think it's revenge of angry Bella (usually allergic reaction happen sooner, but the UTI test is definitely a good thing.)
One of the best tricks with a behavior problem cat is to try and exhaust them with whatever kind of play they like. Usually once they have a quality feather stick play session they'll forget why they were mad.
Posted by Cis at February 17, 2003 07:51 AM
I know now that one of our cats is older (almost 17) he doesnt get all his shots at one time because the normal reaction to them (sluggishness and sometime mood 'swings') tend to last longer and they are more sore after getting their shots...but I think talking to your vet is the best thing to do, at least you will know what it might be instead of trying to guess for yourself!
Good luck!

Yummy!
We just made our reservations for dinner at The Old San Francisco tonight. I love that place. Big blocks of cheese at your table, yummy steaks, and a girl on a swing. Good times.
