The End of Blogathon 2005

It's hard to believe, but the 2005 Blogathon is now officially over.

I'd like to thank all the people that sponsored me so far this year, raising a total of $371 for Heifer International. Since I didn't begin fundraising until a little over a week ago, I am pleasently surprised by the amount that we were able to raise.

My sponsors are as follows: Mac, Laurence, Wendy, Howard, Mie, Elaine, Ealasaid, Elke, Kristine, Ken, Luka, Brenna, Don, Groovehouse, Karel, Shawn, Lilith, Terry, Naubionna, Jaime, and Heather.

All of these people are getting their name entered into a drawing for a set of my Burn It CDs, four discs in total. We'll be accepting sponsors until Tuesday, so I won't do the drawing until then. If you can spare a few dollars, please go sponsor me. Keep in mind that I put over fifty songs up for you to download for free within these posts, so if you liked a few of them, sponsoring me would be a lovely thing to do.

I's also like to say congratulations to all the other bloggers that participated. We've managed to raise over $55,000 for many different charities to help lots of people in need. Fantastic job.

Here's the last download of the Blogathon. It should be pretty easy to see why it's the one I chose.

Alanis Morissette - Thank U (Like it? Then buy the CD.)

The Next to the Last Post

It's hard to believe, but it's actually almost time for the Blogathon to come to an end. I was beginning to suspect that I was stuck in some kind of an alternate universe where time went by really slowly. Happily, that's not the case.

Out of all of my mp3s, this one's probably my absolute favorite. The El Orbits are really incredible and you should definitely buy one of their CDs. The prices are very reasonable and the money will actually go to them instead of some big record company.

Sunrise

The sun's coming up, so it's definitely getting closer and closer to beddy bye time which is good since I almost fell asleep sitting up just a minute ago.

You know what's fun? When you get hives for no reason you know of, your eye swells mostly shut, and you're forced to sit there blogging without your glasses even though you're blind as a bat.

Next download is one of my favorite songs ever. It just really makes me want to sing and dance, usually accompanied with extragent gestures like jazz hands, often even done in the car.

We are finally coming into the home stretch for Blogathon. I cannot wait for this to be over. The hives and my swollen eye is making it increasingly difficult to stay on the computer, but with only four more posts to go, there's no way I can give up now.

I'm going to go take a shower and see if that helps. Calgon take me away!

Blogathon Time

I don't know how it's possible, but it seems like it's always time to post (thirty minutes between posts isn't really anything at all, especially when you have to upload files, get the links to them set, etc.) but that we're always a long way from being done.

We're down to three and a half hours which is good, but I'm pretty sure that the rash on my face (which is spreading just about all over now) is hives.

I'm thinking about going to the doctor for a shot on Monday, but since I'm housesitting through Tuesday, if I'm allergic to something here, I don't know if that would help. Man, it really itches.

Let's see if something fast paced might help with the flagging energy levels out there.

Well, in my case, my left eye is still little and functioning normal, but my right eye has swollen about half way shut and itches like crazy. I don't know what the fuck is up with this, but I'm guessing some allergy must have kicked it. It almost feels like poison ivy, though I don't know how I could have gotten in to that.

These Foolish Things

Last night at the Geek Gathering, Barrett went through all the music on my iPod ("I'm not judging your music, but I am judging you a little." *snerk*).

Since I was bringing as much of my music collection as could fit on my iPod over here so I could housesit and have access to my music files, some questionable stuff made it on there (I swear, all the Michael Jackson music was stuff my ex had that I'd ripped when I was putting all of our music into mp3s).

I did feel compelled, though, to defend having Rod Stewart on my iPod. I like some of his older stuff (especially "My Heart Can't Tell You No" and "Forever Young"), but what I really love is his reworkings of the American standards - "I've Got You Under My Skin," "The Nearness of You," "I'll Be Seeing You," etc.

Rod has got the perfect voice for this stuff. I can see him sitting in a dark, smokey bar, drinking whiskey, smoking a cigarette, and pining for what might have been.

Don't believe me? Listen for yourself.

My Favorite Joke Ever - The Repeat

I blogged this last year for Project Blog, but I don't care if it's a repeat or not. It's my favorite joke ever, so it bears repeating for anyone who missed it last time.

One day a man with no arms was walking down the street and thinking to himself that he really needed a job. He was passing a monastery when he noticed a help wanted sign in the window. Curious he went inside to inquire about the job.

He found a monk and asked him what the job was. The monk said, "My son, it's a bell ringer's position, but I don't think you could do the job." The man replied, "If I can prove to you that I can handle the job, can I have it?" The monk agreed, so they went to the belfry.

The man looked at the bell, looked at the monk, and looked back at the bell. He went to the furthest corner from the bell and then ran at it as fast as he could. He head struck the bell sending forth a beautiful chime, so the monk told him he had the job.

For the next two weeks everything was great. The bell was always on time and the monk couldn't have been more pleased. One day, coming back to the monastery, the monk noticed a huge crowd gathered outside and police all over the place. He hurried over to one of the cops to find out what happened.

The cop told him that apparently someone had committed suicide and took him over to the ground under the belfry. The monk looked down and saw the bell ringer, who had run at the bell, missed, and fell out the belfry to his death. The cop asked him if he knew who it was. The monk replied, "Well, his face kind of rings a bell."

A few days later, the dead man's brother comes and asks for the same job. In honor of his brother, he rings the bell the same way, running head-first into the bell. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes again and this man falls to his death as well. The monk is asked by the police if he knew who this guy was and the monk says, "I don't know, but he's a dead ringer for that other guy."

Thanks to Jaime, I was able to rate my inner geek.

I was a disappointing Total Geek with a score of 34.12229%. Kind of funny since I was just telling Barrett at the last Technology Bytes post-show get together that I wished I was geekier. Maybe I will look into learning Linux.

I Am Cornholio! I Need TP For My Bunghole!

I wrote earlier about commercials that I like, so now let me tell you about a commercial that bothers me and one that kind of cracks me up.

Remember those Burger King commercials where the guy wakes up and someone in the Burger King outfit is in bed with him? And I think there was one where the King was hiding in the bushes outside someone's house. Very creepy. I would totally have run screaming from that house.

So, Burger King's latest thing is this made-up band, Coq Roq, to sell their new chicken fries. Apparently, I have the mind of a twelve year boy, because seeing "coq" on the tv makes me giggle like Beavis and Butthead. I do the same thing with the word Bangkok. Twelve year old boy mentality, yo.

In honor of that, enjoy the next download.

Heifer International - My Charity

The charity that I am blogging for today is Heifer International. They supply poor locations around the world (including here in the United States) with a gift animal - a goat, llama, water buffalo, rabbit, etc. - which the people of the region are then taught to take care of. The animal supplies the people with food, (milk, eggs, meat, etc.) items like fur that can be sold or used to make clothing, and much more.

The best part is that the recipient of the animal is then required to give some of the offspring to another family or group of people in need. They in turn do the same and so on and so forth. By teaching people how to become self-reliant and having them help others, Heifer has assisted millions of people in becoming healthy, happy individuals that can stand on their own two feet. In essence, Heifer is the embodiment of the sentiment "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man, feed him for a lifetime."

Here's one of their success stories:

Looking at Zangue Louise and her family today, it's hard to imagine the hungry times they went through. But behind the grins and brightly colored clothes is the story of a single mother of four who has created a sustainable life in a society that can be less than welcoming to women living on their own without a husband.

Eighteen years ago she married and moved to the city. However, her husband threw her out because they had been unable to have a child. She returned to her rural community hoping they would take her back.

According to Raymond Fopa a field officer at Heifer International Cameroon, "It is very difficult for a woman to receive a legal divorce in this country. For men, the laws are more lax."

In her culture Zangue Louise would have to return the dowry her husband paid at the time of the marriage in order to gain a divorce. Zangue Louise was unable to do that. Her community, recognizing the unfairness of her situation, acknowledged her as a single person. When she found another man the community recognized him as her "husband" even though there had been no divorce. The couple had two children in what seemed to be a happy ending to a sad story.

But Zangue Louise's hardships did not end there. Her second husband died. With her community's acceptance, she "married" a third man and had two more children. Another shot at a happy ending that wasn't to be. This husband also died.

On her own again and raising four children, Zangue Louise, was determined to survive. She became part of a group that received from Heifer International pigs and training in animal husbandry, breeding, and crop farming. The pigs produced litters, and soon each family had its own pigs. In a short time Zangue Louise was able to send healthy pigs to market.

Because of Heifer Intenational, today Zangue Louise and her children, Franco, Nelson, Feudjo Zangue Larua, and Nguadjo Bigich, have enough to eat, clean clothes to wear, a happy home in which to live, and smiles on their faces. And maybe this time the happy ending she has worked so hard to achieve.

Please sponsor me if you can and help support this great organization.

And now we're half way through! Woot!
